The Peribaltic Group
Field Symposium on Pleistocene Stratigraphy and Glacial Chronology in Southern Estonia
May 18-23, 1999, University of Tartu, Estonia

Organiser: V. Kalm

45 participants from 12 countries

The 1999 symposium of the Peribaltic Group was held in southern Estonia from May 18-23 under the leadership of Volli Kalm (University of Tartu) and his co-workers. Again this time, we had a big number of participants including our colleagues from North America. This well-organised and certainly very interesting symposium consisted of one day with paper and poster session, and 5 days of field excursion at which we visited numerous sections and geomorphic sites related to glacial geology, stratigraphy and palaeoecology of the Quaternary. In particular, we saw glaciotectonically dislocated Holsteinian interglacial deposits in Kõrveküla, kames with disturbed internal structure at Inglimäe, interlobate Karula Upland complex, an 180-m-deep ancient burried valley filled with Quaternary sediments at Rõuge, a palaeo-ice lobe setting with ice disintergration features NW of Misso, exposures with extremely coarse-grained outwash deposits in Haanja Upland, intermorainic deposits in Kammeri, Kurenurme and Viitka, Eemian Interglacial deposits in Rõngu, deformed and brecciated drumlin sediments in Tulimäe, subglacial till facies in Tamme, the Lake Peipsi sediments, and the Saadjärv drumlin field. An extraterrestrial touch was given at Ilumetsa, where we visited a spectacular, 6000 years old impact crater.

It was therefore a full program of various topics, interesting for a wide range of Quaternary specialists. We enjoyed the hospitality of our Estonian colleagues and we left Tartu with a thorough overview of Quaternary geology in southern Estonia. Some of us will certainly visit these sites again for joint, collaborative investigations.
