Field Symposium on Human Impact and Geological Heritage

May 13–17, 2003, Tallinn, Estonia

The international field symposium “Human Impact and Geological Heritage” held on May 13–17, 2003 in Estonia and dedicated to the memory of the Estonia’s great geologist Karl Orviku, was attended by 55 scientists from 13 countries (Belarus, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden). The scientific programme included a paper session, which was held on May 13, and a scientific excursion on May 14–17. During the paper session thirty papers were given and ten posters presented. The route of the scientific excursion took the participants to NW and NE Estonia, where they visited the area of Palivere and Pandivere ice marginal formations (Vaivara Blue Hills, Kunda Hiiemägi and Lammasmägi Hills, Uljaste, Esker, Kuusalu push moraine, etc.), oil-shale mining regions, military objects of the former Soviet Union, and several picturesque geological monuments (erratics, waterfalls, canyons).

The main organiser of the meeting was Institute of Geology at Tallinn Technical University.
