After looking at the German coastal area last year, the Peribaltic Group has moved to Poland to study Quaternary geology along the Baltic Sea cliffs between Szczecin and Gdansk. This gave us the opportunity to compare glacial geology in these two areas, in particular the history of the last glaciation. It was interesting to note generally similar facies of glacial deposits, especially the glaciolacustrine sediments intercalated with tills, possibly indicating a continuation of large proglacial lakes along the southern margin of the Baltic depression. One major topic of the symposium were glaciotectonic disturbances abundantly occurring at the Polish coast, which are used to reconstruct local ice flow directions during the Weichselian Glaciation.

In particular, we examined magnificent exposures at the Wolin Island with large-scale soft-sediment deformations and we were introduced to local stratigraphy and sedimentary environments inferred from till facies analysis. Also, we studied glacial geology at Trzesacz, palaeolake deposits at Niechorze, chronostratigraphy and palaeogeography of the last glaciation in the Gardno-Leba coastal plain, end moraine structure of the Gardno ice lobe with its different styles of glaciotectonic disturbances, late Pleistocene sedimentary environments at Poddabie, active dune field on the Leba Barrier, and late glacial sediments of an ice-dammed lake including varved clays at Lebork. Some of these sites will be further investigated within the framework of INQUA-projects.

This thoroughly prepared and soundly presented scientific program was accompanied by interesting cultural events including an evening visit to the Slowinski National Park, where we indulged traditional meal and beverages accompanied by the local orchestra. Excellent accommodation facilities throughout the meeting and informal talks at camp fires stretching well into the nights have also contributed to a full success of this conference.
